ABSTRACT
The requirements for a perfect lens are surprisingly simple. In terms of geometric optics, Maxwell in 1858 suggested three conditions. First, all rays from an object point meet again at an image point. Second, an orthogonal object plane is imaged identically as an orthogonal image plane. Finally, the object and image shapes should be identical, with relative sizes determined by magnification.
