ABSTRACT
Museums are the acquirers and holders of collections, and they control their use. Factors that determine the nature of museums have consequences for their collections, too. Such factors include the type of museum – national, regional, local etc. – which will be discussed in this chapter, and the type of collection, which will be considered in Chapter 3.
