ABSTRACT

When I wrote the first edition of this book over ten years ago, I was pessimistic about the future of the CRPG. At best, I thought, whatever spirit the CRPG as I knew it had left in it would find its way into MMORPGs or ARPGs. The very words “turn-based” were enough to make publishers and critics curl their lips. I had good reason to fear that CRPGs were over—cast aside in favor of action games.
