ABSTRACT

Although Dungeon Master–style games seem to dominate the cutting-edge platforms of the early to mid-1990s, there are plenty of other worthy contenders. Some of these, like Infocom's Beyond Zork and Masterplay's Star Saga, are eccentric, one-of-a-kind games whose design strategies have not been reattempted by major developers. In this chapter, we'll look at some other gems that didn't spawn subgenres, but are still worth playing today.
