ABSTRACT

Computer networks are classified as either a network of computers or a set of terminals connected to one or more computers. Most computer networks consist of hosts, terminals, nodes, and transmission links. A node refers to a computer whose primary function is to switch data. Computers used primarily for functions separate from that of switching data are referred to as hosts. In some network designs, the node and host functions may be performed by the same computer. Terminals are devices that interface the user to the computer or computer network, and transmission links join this collection of subnet elements to form a network. The transmission links and nodes, along with the essential control software, make up the communications subnet, often referred to as the data network.
