ABSTRACT
The mature hyaline cartilage tissue is characterized by predominance of the extracellular matrix over the cells. For example, the total cell volume occupies only about 2% of the tissue volume in adult human articular cartilage. The properties of this tissue, therefore, are established by the properties of the matrix.
