ABSTRACT
The development of medicine and the medical profession has had as much to do with the willingness of patients to believe in the power of doctors to cure them as it has with the ability of doctors to do so. At its most basic the relationship between the patient and the doctor is one of fear and hope on the one hand and almost miraculous power on the other.
