ABSTRACT
Patients have suffered long enough the consequences of a medicine practiced by doctors without these skills – doctors who cannot follow a narrative thread; who cannot adopt an alien perspective; who become unreliable narrators of other people’s stories; who are deaf to voice and images; and who do not always include in their regard human motives, yearnings, symbols, and the fellowship born of a common language.
