ABSTRACT

Not every counsellor feels competent or confident towards the task of working with a problem drinker, and not all supervisors feel they have the knowledge to adequately support a supervisee working with this particular client group. There seems to be a kind of myth that drinkers are different – well, drinkers who have crossed that invisible line that defines whether their drinking is to be defined as problematic, often attracting the label of ‘alcoholic’.
