ABSTRACT
Thirty years ago the pharmaceutical industry arranged their clinical trials rather informally. Supplies of new drugs were given to experienced doctors who tried them on a series of patients and pronounced on their usefulness. The trials were small and informal, documentation was minimal and the end product was often a paper published in a medical journal.
