Ian had been working with Nina for a year and their supervisory relationship had developed into one of mutual respect. Nina saw Ian once a month and Ian would use the time to explore issues that had arisen in relation to his client work, although sometimes the sessions took on a more theoretical focus though generally as a result of something that had occurred in a counselling session. They had also focused on the supervisory relationship itself, and explored what was said and what may be left unsaid, what did Ian bring to supervision and what did he leave out, and why. They had realised that the focus was often more on problems and difficulties and Nina had been keen to ensure that there was also time to acknowledge achievements and a sense of “good practice” as well.
