ABSTRACT

The non-biological sludge stabilisation comprises the physical and chemical methods, which are used to achieve oxidation of volatile substances present in sludge and to inhibit its potential for putrefaction. The main physical and chemical methods include heat treatment, lime stabilisation, chlorine oxidation, etc. (Ekelund et al., 1990; Metcalf & Eddy, 2003). Moreover, several new developments are also taking place in this field.
