ABSTRACT
It is impossible to deny the major impact made by the application of physics and engineering to medicine. There can be few of us who will not have experienced this impact directly having had a dental filling or an x-ray for a broken bone. We are likely to know someone who has had a hip joint replacement or an ultrasound scan during the course of pregnancy. Most of these technologies are all well established and the benefits judged to outweigh any potential risks.
