ABSTRACT

Many of the medical images which are currently produced are digital in nature. In some cases, such as MRI and CT, the production of the images is intrinsically digital, as they are the result of computer processing of collected data. In other cases, such as radioisotope images, they can be either digital or directly recorded onto film, although the latter approach is almost extinct in practice. The last remaining bastion of direct film (analogue) images is conventional planar x-ray imaging. However, digital imaging is becoming more common and film is likely to become obsolete, with all images being acquired digitally and viewed from a screen rather than a film.
