ABSTRACT
The static compensator (STATCOM) has been the earliest among all the voltage-sourced converter-based flexible AC transmission system (FACTS) controllers. It is also the one that is installed in maximum numbers by most utilities worldwide. The first STATCOM, rated ±100 MVA, was commissioned at the Sullivan Substation by the Tennessee Valley Authority in 1995.
