ABSTRACT
Modulation is the process of changing tonal centers. It is, along with secondary function, an important source of harmonic variety in music. While it’s true that many folk songs, hymns, and traditional songs contain no modulations, even short pieces often modulate. All modulations, however simple or complex, fall into one of two categories: those with a common chord and those without one.
