ABSTRACT
Nobody knows how life works. Neither physicists nor chemists have ever been able to make a living object from non-living matter. Up to about the 1700s it might have been possible to claim, for example, that flies were naturally generated in dung. But careful study disproved such claims, and it is now admitted that the ‘spontaneous generation’ of life never happens. Life can only arise from seeds created by previous life.
