ABSTRACT

Development is about generating ideas and keeping track of those thoughts. It is important to get the ideas down on paper and into categories—gags, setups/payoffs, characters traits, etc. To keep these organized, there are various approaches: notebooks, software (with prompts for specifics), outlines, flowcharts, beat sheets…. Linda Seger suggests using index cards or an updated version—sticky notes in different colors. 1 Each color represents different story components (i.e., storylines, characters, images, dialogue…). The cards/notes can go onto a board or visually accessible on a digital screen, but there needs to be some way to move them around to show the new connections being made between ideas.
