ABSTRACT

Healthcare sometimes feels like a place where change happens all the time. Anyone who has a long tenure in healthcare or knows a veteran in the field will tell you this industry changes all the time, and it looks nothing like it did 30, 20, even 10 years ago. This is because most of our essential healthcare tools have evolved over time: devices, drugs, documents/forms, insurance codes, regulations, software, tests, and workflows. Taken separately, we can easily see changes to each of these essentials and how these changes have evolved healthcare practice. But that’s not the same as the whole industry transforming like the banking, high tech, media, and transportation examples in the previous chapter. The buildup of all these incremental changes to our essential tools has been significant, but not transformational. That’s important because we have had a lot of practice changing things on a smaller scale, and yet we lack the grace and skill to transform quickly and easily.
