ABSTRACT
Many modern accelerators can produce high-velocity beams of complex nuclei. They are true “atom-smashers,” capable of causing dramatic nuclear reactions like the one in the photograph on the cover of this book. These fast, heavy nuclei, which often retain some of the atomic electrons, are commonly referred to as heavy ions.
