ABSTRACT
Early treatment wetland researchers often conceptualized water movement in free water surface wetlands to be plug flow, meaning that water moved through the system in lock-step from inlet to outlet (e.g., Water Environment Federation, 1990; Reed et al., 1995). This allowed the use of (nominal) detention time in the quantification of pollutant reduction.
