ABSTRACT

Like estimating and safety, planning and scheduling have been covered extensively in other textbooks dedicated solely to those topics. Our purpose in this chapter is to briefly discuss schedule development, and then in a later chapter focus on using the schedule as a superintendent management tool. Time management is just as important to project success as cost management. The key to effective time management is to carefully plan the work to be performed, develop a realistic construction schedule, and then manage the performance of the work. Some textbooks use the terms ‘scheduling’ and ‘construction management’ (CM) synonymously. However, this use of the two terms is too all-encompassing. Construction management, especially jobsite supervision, as can be seen within the context of this book, involves many other aspects than just scheduling.
