ABSTRACT
A new kind of research—new in both direction and scope—is needed to improve the productive ability and well-being of today’s small farmer in the tropics. This new research should be based on an understanding of actual farming systems and how they fit into the social and physical environments. Such an understanding is essential if research is to contribute to changing those systems in ways that will promote the achievement of the farmers’ goals.
