ABSTRACT

The modelling of large deformations is of great importance for engineering problems. One example that illustrates the need for taking large deformations into account is the installation of geocontainers. Geocontainers are sand-filled bags encapsulated by a geotextile membrane. Due to their resistance to erosion, they are often used for coastal applications such as revetments and breakwaters. However, the modelling of geocontainer installation is a challenge as it combines large deformations with complex soil and water interaction behaviour.
