ABSTRACT

Not all footwear impressions located at crime scenes are clearly visible and distinct. Many footwear impressions contrast so poorly with the surface they are on that very little detail in them can be observed. Some impressions are totally latent and may go undetected. Enhancement procedures can both develop those latent impressions or improve the contrast of those footwear impressions which are already visable. The enhancement increases the amount of information available in the impression, which in turn enables a more thorough and often more conclusive examination.
