ABSTRACT
Although the automobile was a significant invention, its impact on society occurred only after a system of roads was built. In the United States, the interstate highway system is often credited with changing American lifestyles because it allowed people to travel long distances by car. Interestingly, the interstate highway system was built by the Department of Defense as a way to quickly transport military personnel and equipment in case of attack.
