152When we classified the different procedures of SQA in section 1.2.3 we distinguished between process control and acceptance control procedures. Through process control or process inspection we are trying to detect quality deficiencies during the production process in order to intervene immediately. In section 1.3.2 we used the term online quality control because of its integration into the manufacturing process. Acceptance sampling or acceptance control can only detect quality deficiency without being able to have a counteractive influence (postline quality control). Its underlying philosophy is defensive, i.e., it serves for quality control, not for quality improvement. In future preline and online techniques (mainly experimental design methods and control charting) will reduce and finally at least partly eliminate the need for postline control procedures.
