ABSTRACT
In this chapter I recall all the basic mathematical tools that will be extensively employed in this book. For the most standard of these I do not give detailed proofs: some can be found in more general books such as Halmos (1958), Bowen and Wang (1976) and Noll (1987); others are simple exercises.
