ABSTRACT

Acid precipitation has become a widespread and increasing problem in several countries in Europe and North America. Acid falls as rain and snow and even dry gases and small particles. Some people may be surprised to learn that the latter two account for approximately two thirds of the total acid precipitation in the U.K. (Mason, 1989). The major acids of concern are sulfuric and nitric which are formed in the atmosphere from emissions of coal-fired power plants and automobiles.
