ABSTRACT

The general public in Indonesia and taxpayers in Europe, the United States, and Japan have a special interest in these issues because they will pick up much of the bill for bank and business mismanagement. Foreign donations and loan subsidies reduced spending for public goods and services, and higher taxes will have to cover a great share of the enormous fiscal cost of the financial crisis. Taxpayers also may be concerned to know their money could be used to subsidize illegal logging and other practices with negative environmental and social effects.
