ABSTRACT

The reasons behind these career conundrums, our research revealed, are influenced by gender, class, and race. Some men might find the female tilt of the profession unattractive. Prospective teachers from secure financial backgrounds might be less concerned about the pay scale. A few individuals might find the lack of a career ladder in teaching problematic, whereas others are not concerned about that feature at all. Fewer and fewer people of color enter teaching today than was the case many years ago, perhaps as a result of widening opportunities in other careers.
