ABSTRACT

The BSLC develops and coordinates innovative service-learning projects such as BIAP, which provides a common programmatic theme (human rights and immigration) for cross-disciplinary servicelearning. The image of Bentley College students on stage with Jose Ramos Horta-an activist whose ceaseless struggle on behalf of the East Timorese for independence from Indonesian oppression earned him the 1998 Nobel Peace Prize-challenges popular perceptions of students at a business college. In the self-centered and civically disengaged late 1990s, it seems incongruous for business students to spend a Saturday morning at a grass-roots event called, “The Many Voices of Human Rights: A Testimonial for the Universal Declaration of Human Rights,” an event that celebrates what has been called the single most important statement of human moral solidarity.
