ABSTRACT
Human development is the science of human biology and psychology in social context. When asked, “Does X cause Y?” the appropriate answer for a student of human development is always, “It depends.” It depends upon who is involved, and when and where in historical time and cultural place a particular X is acting to produce a specific Y. This emphasis on context and contingency is an ever-present aspect of the scientific landscape, nowhere more so than in studying adolescence.
