Systematic desensitization in the treatment of neuroses is based on the principle of reciprocal inhibition, which Wolpe (1958) describes as follows: “if a response incompatible with anxiety can be made to occur in the presence of anxiety-evoking stimuli it will weaken the bond between these stimuli and the anxiety responses.”
