ABSTRACT
The last decade has witnessed a number of changes that are bringing about a transformation of the economics and politics of hospital care in the United States. These changes create dilemmas that must be addressed by health policymakers. The changes can be categorized according to whether they pertain primarily to the financing of hospital care, to the organizational structures of the hospitals themselves, or to the systems for the delivery of hospital services.
