ABSTRACT
The present essay investigates the historical development of information theory, and traces its intellectual impact on the academic field of communication. Claude E. Shannon’s information theory shaped the directions taken by the field of human communication, defined many of its concepts, and contributed to the intellectual integration of this field that arose from diverse multidisciplinary roots.
