ABSTRACT

In an age of Donald Trump, Brexit, and Fake News™, it is difficult to know what in the world you can be certain of. Life and reality television meld; professions are performances. But while we are uncertain of what lies ahead, we live in the most informed of times. With the Internet at our fingertips, we hold access to the entire history of our time as a species on earth. As a collective we are glued to our screens, ravenously gobbling up any and all information to do with whatever our moods fancy. Sometimes, it’s trivial: cat videos and arguing in comment sections, taking up swathes of time that we seem to gladly sacrifice. Often, though, it’s more serious. We watch with rapt intensity as stories—disasters, terrorist attacks, travesties—unravel before our eyes.
