ABSTRACT

Concussions are complex injuries that have the potential to impact every facet of an athlete’s life. Due to the complexity in the occurrence, etiology, and recovery from sport-related concussions, qualitative research approaches are particularly well-suited to explore the experience and meaning of sustaining a concussion in sport. In this chapter, we start by briefly reviewing the different methods and methodologies used within qualitative research. We then report the results of a review of qualitative research conducted on sport-related concussions and comment on the usefulness and benefits of various qualitative methods. We conclude by discussing some of the research trends and the uses of different qualitative approaches to advance sport-related concussion research.
