ABSTRACT

This Introduction to the Handbook develops an argument for the study of communication and security. That rationale focuses on their ongoing convergence in two interrelated spheres: first, as worldly phenomena, and second, as formal objects of scholarship. We argue that this first-level convergence (which we signal by the symbol communication ← → security) warrants carefully configured interdisciplinary inquiry. We subsequently review trends in the fields of Communication and Security Studies that encourage and discourage this envisioned second-level convergence. We conclude by previewing the volume’s collection of chapters.
