ABSTRACT

This chapter will explore the development and use of digital communication systems in use in early years settings and consider them in line with the developing children’s rights agenda relating to the ownership, use, and storage of digital information relating to children. Within this discussion there will also be a consideration of the use of digital media used by parents when mediating a child’s world and the issues related to digital imagery and ownership of material. This will be linked to Bronfenbrenner’s Ecological Systems Model (1979) by consideration of the role of digital media within a child’s cultural world and how this forms a significant part of the macro system of a contemporary childhood.
