ABSTRACT

Common factors are the core ingredients shared by various schools of counseling. A better understanding of the basic healing properties underlying one’s counseling theories and techniques helps counselors apply their counseling theories more consciously and effectively. In addition, the gap between theoretical orientations and practice is bridged when counselors identify the common factors in their counseling theories and reflect on the specific skills that activate these factors. This chapter discusses theoretical notions in contemporary counseling practices through the lens of common factors. It aims to inform counselors about findings on common factors and addresses the application of these selected common factors in counseling practice.
