ABSTRACT

Theories of psychotherapy provide a framework for therapists to better help clients make sense of their behavior, thoughts, and feelings throughout the therapeutic process. We paint theories of psychotherapy with a broad brush in this chapter. With so many new theoretical approaches, we chose the theories that appeared to be most influential in the extant literature. Those theories are Psychoanalysis, Jungian, Adlerian, Existential, Person-Centered, Gestalt, Behavioral, Choice/Reality, Solution Focused, and Feminist. We included a discussion of their background, understanding of personality, application to practice, and multicultural considerations. The chapter also includes many references for further reading.
