ABSTRACT

While many human service-focused disciplines have a long history of external funding, counselor education and supervision is not one of them. However, current counselor educators and supervisors wishing to pursue sponsored research have limited within discipline mentorship and few models available to guide their efforts. The absence of counselor educators and supervisors in the grant arena restricts the socialization of new counselor educators and supervisors into externally funded work, as there are not established mechanisms of support. Simultaneously, there is increased expectation within higher education for all faculty to obtain funding to support their research. The following chapter seeks to fill the gaps in the external funding knowledge base and aims to assist counselor educators, supervisors, and future counselors in their endeavors to successfully secure funding by demystifying the process. The chapter begins with a discussion of the iterative process of developing fundable research projects and identifying potential funding sources. Following is an overview of how to engage in writing the proposal narrative, including a discussion of the benefits and challenges of collaboration. Helpful tips are provided related to how to revise proposals, respond to reviewer feedback, and judiciously manage the funds once secured.
