ABSTRACT

The purpose of this chapter is to provide counselors, novice researchers in counseling, and counselor educators a framework for completing a literature review. This chapter will outline steps to the identification, reviewing, organizing, and the analysis of extant literature in counseling research. This chapter will also discuss methods for synthesizing the literature in a systematic way and explain how to be successful in the writing process. Lastly, this chapter will provide counselor educators with pedagogies to cultivate greater competence at each stage of the literature review process for graduate students. The process of conducting a literature review in the counseling field is an integral component in mentoring counseling students in their development to become informed and ethical producers of counseling-related research.
