ABSTRACT

The group therapy context is often referred to as a microcosm of society, as the power, privilege, and systems of oppression that exist in the United States are also inherent in the group therapy context. The Association for Specialists in Group Work’s (ASGW). Multicultural and Social Justice Competence Principles for Group Workers expect competent group leaders to be sensitive to group members’ intersectional identities and be aware of their own intersectional identities, biases, and assumptions, as these factors influence group composition, group dynamics, and leader interventions. This chapter will provide an overview of the awareness and skills necessary for practicing multiculturally competent group work.
