ABSTRACT

Cognitive developmental theorists purport that one’s ability to process information moves from rigid and egocentrically based conceptualizations toward more holistic worldviews. Across the life span, unique developmental milestones influence one’s way of being and thinking about the world. This chapter will use a cognitive developmental lens to examine human growth and offer counselors emotionally and developmentally appropriate ways to promote cognitive development in clients. Specifically, deliberate psychological education (DPE) and the Matching Model will provide a framework for promoting cognitive developmental growth across the life span. Understanding the cognitive abilities of clients can assist in matching and supporting the unique needs of the client while also challenging them in a supportive manner to foster continued growth.
