ABSTRACT

Regardless of theoretical orientation, counselors need to be aware of the most recent evidence-based interventions in the field of trauma. All professional counselors, whether in a K-12 school, college/university, community agency, hospital, or private practice, need to be knowledgeable about how to assess and treat clients with trauma exposure. It is critical for counselors to be able to recognize trauma symptoms in order to be able to utilize effective treatment modalities. Further, counselor educators are encouraged to include trauma training into their courses and the overall curriculum. Additionally, practitioners should pursue professional development training in the area of trauma remediation to become more competent, especially when working with diverse clients in order to deliver services to clients more effectively. This chapter provides an overview of the history of trauma remediation and introduces traumatic stress theory as a more viable explanation of trauma symptoms for all types of trauma exposure.
