ABSTRACT

Child development is a complex process involving many domains of growth and maturation. Differences in children’s cognitive, emotional, linguistic, and perceptual understanding of the world make misdiagnosis of trauma a common occurrence. This chapter explores research on developmental implications of trauma in children and adolescents and evidence-based treatment approaches specific to trauma and children, and outlines recent changes in diagnostic criteria in the DSM-5. Specific attention is paid to types of trauma children may experience and understanding children’s trauma reactions and their developmental implications. Evidence-based trauma-focused interventions and experiential classroom activities are presented to support students in learning how to best engage with clients who have experienced trauma.
