ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on issues related to advocacy and social justice in counseling and counselor education. The intent is to provide the reader a contextual understanding of the facets and nuances of advocacy and social justice within the field of professional counseling. Advocacy is presented as an action-oriented process that situates itself at the heart of counseling. In addition, the reader will be provided with an understanding of how advocacy is needed to further the efforts to foster social justice and engage in social justice advocacy in professional counseling. Social justice will be presented in a historical context with dialogue to help the reader begin to see how advocacy for social justice should be integral parts of the professional counselors’ training experience. Further, the chapter will share how all of these constructs are synergistic with the training, growth, and development of current and historical issues and their relevance to professional counseling and counselor training.
