ABSTRACT

This chapter explores Kosovo’s journey to independent statehood and the struggle for international recognition. The chapter argues that Kosovo’s diplomatic success in obtaining bilateral recognition has been the situational assemblage of multiple discourses, practised through a broad variety of performative actions, and shaped by a complex entanglement within global assemblages of norms, actors, relations and events. A brief history of Kosovo’s quest for independent statehood is offered to demonstrate the non-linear process of state-becoming. The chapter then explores Kosovo’s struggle for international recognition by focusing on the diplomatic discourse, performances, and entanglements with external actors as three segments that have underpinned the country’s campaign for consolidating independent statehood. The chapter concludes with a brief prognosis of three potential futures for Kosovo in its quest for becoming a full member of the international community.
